Hover Dish planters from Pot, Inc. (how excited am I?)

The brightly colored Hover Dish hanging planters from Pot, Inc. have created quite a stir. They’re good looking and functional, two things that are surprisingly hard to find together in a hanging container, thus I’ve gushed about them repeatedly. I still can’t quite believe it but I am the lucky recipient of a Dolga pot (in limon) and a Flango pot (in nemo) courtesy of Pot, Inc…

Even though I’ve seen these in person I was a little surprised by how big they were when I unpacked them here at home. Like when you see the sofa in the furniture showroom and think “that’s about the right size” and when you get it home you realize your living room is not a furniture showroom. Clearly these were meant to hang in only one place and that was under the shade pavilion…

Perfect! The only problem is there isn’t a lot of light under there, so what to plant them up with? I chose painted ferns for the Dolga, a nice contrast with the lime green color and they’ll appreciate the bright shade. Just for fun I added a bit of Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides), I picked up a whole bundle for only $5 at the pet store (meant to be used with your reptile tanks perhaps?).

Planting the Dolga was extremely easy because of the angle of the sides. I plopped a plant down in the center and then leaned others (evenly spaced) around the sides, fill it up with soil and presto!

So I'd figured neither of these would get enough sun for succulents to be successful, but watching the light move through the space I realized the Flango (in back) got substantial morning and afternoon sun.

What the heck, succulents!

I love these planters! If you’re in the Portland area I know Bob Hyland is carrying them at his shop Contained Exuberance, if you're not then Pot, Inc. does mail order. And if you’re a blogger coming to the 2014 Garden Bloggers Fling here in Portland you’ll have a chance to take one home with you as a raffle prize...

  1. They're absolutely fabulous, and I love how you've planted them up. That's a perfect spot under your shade pavilion. Spanish moss at the pet store, I'll have to look into that. I go there for gravel to top my succulent pots, but I didn't realize they might have Spanish moss.

    1. If they don't have it you can always stop at "my" pet store the next time you're down in Portland!

  2. I love these too. I have several places where I could hang one...or two...or three. Maybe I'll be lucky and win one in the raffle :-).

  3. Beautiful! I could have sworn you wrote that these were ceramic dishes, and I was immediately worried about them crashing to the ground when I saw the holes to hang them -- but just checked the Pot site and see that they're steel. Whew!

Are you bothered by the fact that you can't hang these by a single cable? ;)

    1. Yikes, they are plenty heavy as-is (once planted up) and I can't imagine what they would be like if ceramic.

  4. They're wonderful, so perfect for your pavilion. I think it's great that you put painted ferns in one to change things up a bit.

    1. I'm kind of worried I might need to do that with the other one too (if not painted ferns then something shadier). As I'm just not seeing the light I thought I would on the succulents and I don't want them to die!

    1. Reminds me I keep reading the phrase "pot plant" on British blogs and I smile every time.

  8. Love the containers and love the plants you chose for them! I was thinking before you revealed that the second container gets so much light that you could try a shade-tolerant succulent like Chiastophyllum oppositifolium, but I guess you don't need to. Wow, live Spanish moss at the pet store, who knew?

    1. I might have to change things up Evan, as the light doesn't quite seem to be living up to what I thought it would be.

  9. I've paid for one of my own (and they ain't cheap!), but I'd love to win another in a raffle. Can't wait to see who gets it at the Fling! Your two look wonderful.

  10. I wish people would stop posting pictures of these: they are stunning and you can not get them in the uk (insert sulking face here). Loree your planting in them is perfect as usual and not helping me pretend I don't want one.

    1. I'm sorry Spiky O, and I guess mail ordering them would be horribly expensive? Or maybe they don't ship to the UK? But the company is in Canada for goodness sake, shouldn't that make it easier somehow?

    2. I don't think they mail to the UK.
