Unlike the circle pot which showed up unexpectedly on my doorstep I knew this shipment was coming…spiky plants in the mail! How wonderful is that? David from Albuquerque (author of the blog The Desert Edge) sent me a little bit of the desert…
First the Opunita, as you can see they came labeled not only with their names but their place of origin!
The long black spines on the Opuntia macrocentra are amazing! Here it is against ‘Cristiani spineless’…
And now rooting before being planted up in its long term container.
The pads of Opuntia Engelmannii are the largest in my garden…
Their long white spikes are fabulous against the pale green.
Next the Agaves and a small prickly interloper…
They were looking a little parched when they arrived I wrapped a wet paper towel around the roots until I could plant them. Since going in the soil they’ve been drinking up Oregon’s liquid sunshine and spreading out their arms.
Well except for A. scabra, he’s still pouting about journey north.
Thank you for the New Mexican spikes David!
Very nice package from the Desert Dweller! Cold hardy so your yard can be super spiky all year.
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly some of them are only borderline but I am getting braver when it comes to "flirting" with the edge...
DeleteVery nice, and coincidentally I'm expecting something similar on my doorstep today. :-)
ReplyDeleteUhm...can't wait to see what shows up at your door!
Deleteexcellent spikes! That is pretty cool! David is legit awesome.
ReplyDelete"Legit awesome" is high praise...
DeleteThat must have been like Christmas in July or whatever the saying is. Beautiful plants, all of them! And they're all super hardy, too.
ReplyDeleteHow about Christmas in April? It was...
DeleteHow very nice of David to send these to you. Can the A. scabra live outside here? Mine died when I planted it in the garden, but it could have been my novice agave planting knowledge back then....
ReplyDeleteCistus says to zone 7, "One of the hardiest of the large Agaves" my new theory is you don't know if you haven't tried...we'll see if I get brave and try.
DeleteDid you know that you are not supposed to take plants across state lines? Plant diseases are transmitted this way is one reason....you just don't know 100% for sure what that plant is carrying and could effect the crops in your area.
ReplyDeleteI do know that California doesn't let you bring plants into the state, but I don't know of any Oregon restrictions. Of course there are invasive plants that one should not bring in, but these plants are certainly not in that category. And in fact I had a very respectable nursery once tell me that the concern is the soil and what it might be harboring. These were either sent as cuttings (the Opunita) or bare root (the Agaves).
DeleteNow these look like dangerous plants here. The black spiky one is way cool.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it? Watch out...you might be coming over to the spiky side!
DeleteYour liquid sunshine did a miracle! For the Agave scabra, it may need Shirley or Pam to speak some reassuring Texan to it, as it comes over the border only there...let's hope for a few 70's-80's up your way.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that the Agave scabra and Opuntia macrocentra are best in a pot, to bring inside where dry, once the sky begins dripping. Possibly 'Cristiani Spineless'?
Glad you are enjoying, Senora y Senor Danger!
Still a bit foggy this morning (at 10:30) but they are saying sunshine and our warmest temps of the year this weekend so hopefully...
DeleteThank you for the planting recommendations, I've also still got the info in your email to refer to.
Is there anything better than seeing a delivery truck pull up, knowing there are plants on board...I think not!
ReplyDeleteExcellent point.
DeleteI need your address so I can come over and haul all of those to my house. What does not do well outside, I put up in the Death Valley Shack.
ReplyDeleteSomeday I would love to see this Death Valley Shack...
DeleteAnytime I see NM in anything, it stands out! The funny thing is that anytime I see NM and plants combined, David has something to do with it. I may just have to turn his 'Hecho en Nuevo Mexico' design into a t-shirt!
ReplyDeleteIsn't that design just the best? I loved it...and think it would make a fabulous t-shirt design, of course you'd better send David one.
DeleteI really think I may. I'll definitely send David one as well, haha.
