That is a gorgeous shrub, and I'm pretty sure it's a white flowering currant. The flowers are usually pink or red. It's a PNW native. Congrats to all the winners!
ReplyDeleteI saw another one yesterday just a few blocks away. It's overall form was even better. Now I've got to be sure to check and see what it looks like after the blooms fade!
DeleteWow, that shrub is a knockout! Is it aromatic? Alison says it's a currant, so I'm guessing edible berries follow? I'm feeling zone envy creeping up again ...
ReplyDeleteI don't recall a scent, and I actually stood there quite awhile looking at it. But then again I don't detect a scent to witch-hazel either so maybe I'm missing it.

ReplyDeleteI know many folks dismiss the Lilac as a trash shrub but looking at these (and thinking of white flowers) has me longing for the Lilacs I left behind at my garden in Spokane.
DeleteYeah that looks like a white flowered Ribes sanguineum. Maybe the cultivar 'White Icicle'. Really beautiful.

DeleteWe have those shrubs all over the place around here as native understory. I was sure it was an elderberry (red berries in fall) but at the HPSO annual meeting yesterday Bruce Wakefield had brought a branch and labeled it: Oregon native 'Indian Plum', or Oemleria cerasiformus. I will be watching this space with interest to see what others think.
