Dancing Oaks Nursery, 2011 visit

After visiting Bauman’s Farm, Fry Road and Mosaic Gardens my last stop of the day was to be Dancing Oaks Nursery in Monmouth, Oregon. Last time I visited I started in the display gardens and then worked my way into the nursery portion. I went in reverse this time…and to tell the truth I was on a bit of a mission. I’d fallen in love with Asphodeline lutea when I saw it on the ANLD Tour in June, and a quick search on plant lust told me I could find this plant at Dancing Oaks (now I see it’s also available at Cistus). I planned to pick up a couple of these…but also have a look around. Love this color combo (the green is Osmunda regalis)… I love the hand written signs at Dancing Oaks… Variegated Water Canna I meant to circle back and get one of this….and I completely forgot until just now when edited my photos. Damn. Buddleja colvilei (the) Grass House I failed to get the proper name for this grass, so I’m calling it Sputnik grass. Edgeworthia chrysantha. I’ve caught the Edgeworthia bug. The early spring flowers are one thing…but I am really loving the leaves. Time to enter Yuccaville, and thankfully they also let Agaves live here. Agave Kissho kan (BTW seeing this one pushed me over the edge…and I have since bought one, finally!) Agave Schidigera ‘Shira Ito no Ohi’ Look at this Drimia Macrocentra (Snkaes Head…zone 9)…they are perfectly round! Love the Sarracenia! Finally! The object of my (current) obsession… Asphodeline lutea, I got two (both with multiple plants in the container. Okay….off to the display garden! This has got to be a Banksia? That’s the problem with waiting a month to go through your photos…the memory fades. And I wish I knew the name of this (I’m guessing a Magnolia…) This formation reminds me of the cinder block succulent walls that are all over the blogosphere right now. Want this Aloe… I believe these are Lobelia tupa, about to bloom. And this…I want it! (what is it?) The gorgeous variegated Ginko finishes up our Dancing Oaks visit. This nursery is a magical place…I’ll be back, in the mean time I’ll be visiting their booth at the upcoming Fall (choke) Hardy Plant Society of Oregon Sale.

  1. I still haven't made the trek out there... I must go! I think that mystery rosette on the ground is Digitalis parviflora. I great foxglove. I had one this year and hope to have lots next year thanks to seeds.

  2. I could be happy in such a place. I've been pondering the asphodels too. I'm glad you took the plunge. And if that's D. parviflora, wow!

  3. I'm impressed that you crammed so many visits into one day. Dancing Oaks is a full day excursion for me (maybe because it happens so seldom). I could spend half a day in the tree section alone.

  8. You picked such a beautiful day to do all your traveling. I love the blue sky backdrop. I'm glad you found the plants you're looking for and then some. :) I believe the Magnolia is M. sieboldii.

Grace, it was a gorgeous day, the blue sky has such a cheering effect. Here's hoping today's will break out any moment.

    Thank you Ian!

Mark and Gaz, the display garden is huge too. I think I was ready to head home so I breezed through a little fast. The first time I was there I slowly wandered through for what seemed like hours.
Spiky O, I can't stop wondering what took me so long!

  12. I too have never been down there and the Guys are always telling me to come visit them at the Nursery. I'm afraid......I have been purchasing from them at sales for years. They always turn me to the greatest drought tolerant plants for my gardens. One day I will have to go!
