A new wreath too...

In my last post I wrote about the new mantel for the New Year, well there's a new wreath too...

I'd grown rather attached to the aluminum Christmas tree wreath that hung on the wall behind our bed for the entire month of December. When I took it down the whole bedroom looked empty without it. I thought about buying a big grapevine wreath but hesitated, feeling like that just wasn't the right fit. I knew there had to be a better idea and one morning while laying in bed staring at the ceiling fixture I realized what it was.

Metal! Isn't that always the right answer? Bonus points if it's either shiny metal, or metal with a great patina, like my bedside lamp.

Aha! A friend had dropped by a couple of wine barrel rings last fall, one of them quite large. The perfect size to hang on the wall behind the bed...

Obviously it need a little spicing up, aka plants! I used various protea stems, a banksia bloom, leucadendron, leucospermum and mahonia—all dried, leftovers from the holiday decor.
The color isn't nearly as vivid when the flowers are dried, but it still remains—and the texture is unbeatable.

In case you're the practical type—like my husband—and look at this photo and worry about an earthquake, (we're overdue), and a ring of metal falling from the wall, and hitting us while we're sleeping; worry not. It's firmly wired to the nail it's hanging from which is in a stud in the wall.

  1. "Less vivid" is a better fit to the upcycled wine barrel ring.
And the bed is made this time :-D

    1. Yes the bed is made, my art director (Andrew) wasn't home this time to encourage otherwise.

  2. It's artful and pleasing to the eye. Very nice. :)

  3. Simply beautiful! I'm surprised to discover that Leucospermum flowers hold up so well when dried - I guess I should try grabbing the flowers before the squirrels snag them.

    1. Not only that, but they laid outside in the weather for a couple of weeks too! You'll see them (maybe) next week in a post I'm working on.

  4. Oh, that is really pretty. The whole room is lovely and comforting.

  5. Never really think about putting a wreath anywhere except a door but this works really well. The muted colours are perfect as the rooms colours are in natural tones. Creative genius!

    1. High praise! I think the bathroom might be the only room in the house that hasn't had a wreath it in...

  6. I hear you about earthquake/things fall off wall. Over my bed is the only instance I specifically used plex when framing something. Might fall off and hit me and give me a bruise, but it won't shatter and stab me with a shard (I hope?).
I'm beginning to think a lot of us have these rims floating around (cough, six, cough). I love the creative and lovely uses that I'm seeing- like this wreath- really suits the season, calmand . I hope to see more!

    1. Six!?! Wow. You must have plans for them to have accumulated that many?

  7. I really like it. I also love those flowered pillow covers and top sheet. Very nice. I have a shell wreath I made hanging above my bed. Probably not the safest but I made it years ago when living on an island full of shells.

    1. A shell wreath sounds grand, but yikes, also a little dangerous and painful if it ever fell.

  8. The flowers and slight rust really complement the lamp, nice touch. I hope to continue to see more creative uses for these rings. I'm getting the feeling lots of us have them (cough).

  9. We have a couple of salt lamps on a shelf above our bed. Now those could really result in a rude awakening in the case of an earthquake!

Your wreath and your mantle are both fantastic. They must be a great distraction for you from whats about to happen outside. For me here, a little south of Portland, they are saying a low of 14F on Sunday morning, with the temperature staying below the freezing mark for 90 hours straight.

    1. Honestly I haven't been inside the house during the day since Monday, I've been out prepping the garden for the arctic disaster. Once I'm confined to the indoors when things get nasty then I'll definitely appreciate them both.

  10. Another great use for wine barrel rings. We've got a large heatpump box over our bed. It seems firmly attached, but if an earthquake hits, I might be a goner.
