A special evening at Thicket

Last Thursday the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon and Thicket Garden Shop teamed up for a special "After Hours" event...

It had been so long since I'd been out and about at a nursery in the company of friends, I was very excited to attend. I snuck in the back gate and was immediately greeted by fellow HPSO Board member, Jeanne Keyes.

With her was Debbie Teashon, down from the Seattle-area to attend the OAN's Farwest Show. This smart lady knows how to make the most of her travels!

I do not know these ladies, but they looked so cute and comfortable that I had to snap their photo.

Shelly Durica-Laiche of Indio Metal Arts was also part of the event, selling her metal planters and garden art—I am the proud owner of one of her pieces and glad she was there so more people could learn about what she does.

Here's the HPSO's Social Media and Zoom wonder-woman Hayden Brown (L) and her friend Elizabeth Brosig (R).

The HPSO's president Barb Christopher.

For just a moment I thought that was my hair and arm and wondered how a photo of me made it onto my camera roll, but no. That's not my handbag!

Thicket is so full of inspirational vignettes.

So as I said, I entered at the back gate of Thicket and since I'm still walking at only about 85% of capacity my goal was to walk from the back to the front of the nursery—chatting along the way—and then back to where I'd entered. Then I'd make haste back to my car and home to elevate the ankle. Here I was, at the front—half of the journey complete!

I have no idea who this truck belongs to but love that they scored a parking spot right out front.

Damn. Leucospermum 'Veldfire', such a cool plant. Very high on the plant lust meter.

What is that! Mosaic plant as a floater? That changes everything for my stock tank pond. I've only seen this used as a planted aquatic. Nope! Sound Gardener caught my error, it's actually Salvinia minima.

Ya, I really considered grabbing one of those tomatoes.

HPSO Vice President Beth Winter and her mom. Note the signage about masks in the greenhouse. I love our people willing to play it safe.

Inside the greenhouse...

Back outdoors and a handsome Schefflera delavayi.

HPSO's new office director Beth Sorensen (L) and my partner in speaker program planning and scheduling, Zoe Nielsen (R).

Finally there I was, back where I started—at the back gate. What a FUN event—for those of you in the Portland area there's another HPSO After Hours coming up at Pomarius Nursery on Sept 2nd, 6-8pm—more info here.

A note for those of you who follow my blog via email subscription. Blogger (Google) announced earlier this year they were discontinuing the follow by email option in July. Here it is late August and those emails are still being sent, surprising, but I expect them to end any day now. I have not yet migrated my subscribers to a new service. I hope to do so soon, but I thought it was also worth warning you that your emails may end abruptly. I’ll still be posting here Monday, Wednesday, and Friday though, so click on over anytime for the latest!

  1. Looks like a great event and an equally nice nursery. We have been having such hot weather again that I've stayed away from nurseries knowing I have a few fall things coming in the mail. We are back under mask orders in our city and county even though our COVID numbers are pretty good.

    1. I read yesterday that we're now being asked to mask up in some outdoor situations, prior it had just been when in enclosed spaces.

  2. This looks like such a wonderful event! You're so lucky to be living in a town with such an active gardening culture.

    1. As a board member of the HPSO I feel justified in saying some of our active gardening culture is due to the hard work of countless volunteers.

Good to see you, Loree! I think I brought that bromeliad home. Or one like it!

  4. I agree with Gerhard, how wonderful to have events like this to share ideas and love of plants. We have nothing even close.

    1. I'm praying we'll be able to gather again in the spring at our huge Hortlandia plant sale. Fingers crossed.

  5. I'm agreeing with Gerhard and Eliza... oh, to live in Portland. I'm lusting after all of the metalwork from Indio.

  6. You may have been hit by a heat dome this year but you have the best garden events ever up your way. I'd have been in heaven.

  7. Looks like it was a fine day to be out shopping for plants and meeting friends. A friend and I hooked up the other day too to go to a garden center (the first since May). We chatted with the staff and bought way too much stuff. It was great!

    1. Sounds like you did your visit up right!

  8. The water plant looks like Salvinia minima, or perhaps a relative, to me. It's invasive in Texas and grows in the Big Thicket, just to tie this all together.

    1. Ha! You're right. Darn it. I had mosaic plant on the brain since I'd just been to Hughes Water Garden and lusted after it, again. The dark patches in my photo perfectly mimic the center of the Ludwigia sedioides. Oh well...

  9. I'm glad you see you "up and about", catching the tail end of summer and summer events with 85% capacity. It must feel so liberating. Cool plants and cool people all in one place. The chartreuse bromeliad is eye popping!

  10. It was good to see you. What a treasure that nursery was. Brought a few plant trinkets home with me. The timing was good for me, and with a little Jeanne help had a fabulous weekend in PDX. (Little? I mean a lot) .

    Keep on with the healing!
