These three vignettes were torn from the pages of an upscale home and garden magazine. Of course the fabulous wall color, crazy furniture and that rug (!) are what first caught my eye. Then I noticed the Bromeliads. Which are still in their black plastic nursery pots! The one on the left is even sporting a nice ring of mineral deposits around the bottom of the pot, as though it had been sitting in a saucer before being placed on the stylish table, in the stylish room.
Here the offending pots aren't just black but also that brown "terracotta" color. Why!? The plants don't look like an afterthought, why aren't they shown in a beautiful container that belongs in this room?
More plastic, more mineral deposits. Is it just me or is there an extreme styling disconnect going on here?

As a style trend - ouch!! As a potter, it makes one worry... ;-) Must admit there's a lot about that last room I like, all the same...!
ReplyDeleteAs a lover of containers I hope this is not an actual trend...I just can't imagine that it is...
DeleteYeah..I don't get it. I have to assume it WAS intentionally styled that way. Maybe (maybe?) it is supposed to indicate some sort of design insouciance? IDK
ReplyDeleteI would imagine they were frantically approaching the publishers submission deadline, and had to get the shoot done so they could pack up and go home. Can't really think of any other legitimate reason... Otherwise cool room, though!
ReplyDeleteThe answer is easy: the stylist isn't a gardener. This is just product placement and no real thought goes into it. Not like our Monday vases. First every room had an Orchid, then it was a huge leaf in a vase, now Cacti and Bromeliads. Trending, as they say.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they were trying to make it more real? I know I still have plenty of houseplants in ugly plastic pots, waiting for something nicer. Actually, I think Anna and Ms. Wis. hit it spot on. Rushed design and no real thought given to the plants, which are, after all, just objects to the designers.
ReplyDeleteThey had to be in a rush, otherwise it doesn't make any sense at all. My guess is that the plants in plastic were either an afterthought or the stylist forgot to get enough pots for the plants purchased. Cool rooms though!
ReplyDeleteLove the spaces! Maybe they're trendy ceramic pots intentionally made to look like plastic with mineral deposits. Without my reading glasses, it was difficult to notice
ReplyDeleteI'm not noticing the plastic pots so much as wondering how old these photos are. I'm having terrible flashbacks to various periods of my childhood as I look at these.......

Mr. off-trend
Summer issue of House $ Garden UK...oh so very current!
DeleteIs attention to detail too much to ask? I'd be using that dreaded phrase "You're Fired!"
ReplyDeleteI can almost hear someone saying: "Hey, was somebody supposed to pick up plants?"
