Learn from my mistakes #11: look up dummy...

I searched all around the garden for the perfect spot to plant this Yucca baccata, a gift from a friend. Finally I decided it was tough enough to be the spiky accent I wanted next to the front steps. It needed to be tough because on the days we get newspaper delivery it tends to end up on the plants rather than the porch...

Funny thing though, I didn't think about what was hanging directly above it.

A thirsty container, one I try to water every other day until the water runs out of the drain hole in a steady stream.

A steady stream that waters a plant that doesn't need it, and doesn't want it. Smooth move eh?

In a reverse of sorts...bits of the Spanish moss I tucked in around the painted ferns in my hover dish planter are falling off...

And decorating the bromeliads below, that's fun.

    "Look up, dummy"... How apt!
Before I bought my house, I neglected to look up at the 100 foot, 100 year-old Ponderosa Pine tree in my neighbor's yard that was right on our property line. It made it nearly impossible to plant directly below. Duh.

    1. Yikes! I bet that's not a mistake you'll make again...

  2. Oh gee, now you tell me. I'm crushed as all this time I thought you were perfect:) A bobby pin, unbent paper clip or fancy purchased thingy might pin your Spanish moss to the soil.

    1. Sorry to set you straight, it had to happen eventually. Yes you're right those would help...but then I wouldn't have the fun of discovering where it's ended up!

  3. Love it! I've done things like that far too many times, unfortunately. My most recent blunder was placing a potted agave right under my hover planter. At least I only water it once every week or so.

    1. Yes I'm enjoying the fact I don't have to water the succulent planter much, the one with the ferns though...yikes! I almost killed them by forgetting to water...

  4. Who's moving - the Yucca or the hanging plant?

    1. The hanging plant isn't going anywhere so I think actually I'm going to be a dork and hold a cup under it to catch most of the water.

  6. Ahh but Yucca baccata is tolerant or even appreciates extra watering during the growing season, and I presume you'll be removing the hanging pot in the colder months so extra watering then shouldn't be a problem :) not as bad as you thought (I hope so anyway!)

    1. Good to know! Yes the hanging pot will go away so it can dry out and not freeze and break.

  7. Yes, I've not had any problems dumping lavish amounts of water on a Yucca.

My neighbors dressed up like Duck Dynasty guys by using Spanish moss for the beards and hair. Just in case you need Halloween ideas.

    1. Your climate is a tad bit warmer, still they say we're in for a scorcher this year so maybe this is a blessing in disguise? And speaking of disguises that's hilarious. A touch scary but a lot funny...

  8. But if the Yucca is not rotting then it is not that bad a mistake, isn´t it?
That spanish moss is adventurous, hehehe.

    1. True, but it takes awhile for that to happen and once it does then it's too late.

  9. As long as you can laugh at your mistakes and learn from them. I've made so many stupid little mistakes they simply blur together. Nice of that Spanish moss to do some decorating for you!
