Hey, there was a cactus on that roof!
I enjoy taking different routes. See a street you’ve never been on that’s going the direction you are…take it! You never know what you might find. The odd addition to this house (is that plywood?) caught my eye.
Then I saw the furry green roof.
Then I saw the cactus.
Cactus on a roof, in Portland, Oregon. I tip my hat to you; people with the cactus on your roof.

Hah--the Opuntia looks like it's waving at you!
ReplyDeleteYou're right!
DeleteOK, don't think I'm stalking you, Loree but I swear I went on a walk yesterday to Mt. Tabor and I finally decided to take a picture of this very cactus (I pass by it regularly) to post in next week's post for just for you. That's a little Twilight-Zoneish. Hmmm maybe I'll post it anyhow, would that be too weird?
ReplyDeleteThat's too funny! Andrew and I were talking about you when we were there, we almost bought a house (back in 2005) just just off Stark on the other side and drove past it that day. I mentioned that if we had we'd have been your and Ann's neighbors. You should post it, I'm sure your photo is better. The light that day was awful.
DeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteI can imagine your surprise when you first spotted this. How nicely odd!
ReplyDeleteThis is too funny. When I think of green roofs I don't necessarily think of opuntias. Goes to show that Portland is, well, different :-).
ReplyDeleteAnd, as you've probably gathered, proud of it!
DeleteIf I ever visit your garden Loree (next Fling?) I am going to yank an Opuntia pad and toss it up on your chimney next to that sedum. Advance warning. :)
ReplyDelete"yank an Opuntia pad" sounds so violent (and damaging) how about if I have one ready for you to toss? Heck it's such a fun idea I might just beat you to it...
DeleteThe deer taught me the pad-yanking technique. It's not violent, just requires strong lips. ;)
DeleteMuch more attractive than T.V. antennas!
ReplyDeleteTV antennas disguised as green roof plants, I think you're on to something!
DeleteAll I can think of is "Why the hell not?!?" Keep Portland weird!
ReplyDeleteIndeed.
DeleteHow awesome! Best roof garden I've seen in a long time. If anyone in my neighborhood had a cactus on their roof, the HOA Nazi's would be there in a minute to crucify them. Maybe when I come to Portland for the Fling, I'll stay. :o)
ReplyDeleteCould be tempting for you...although I'm sure we have a crop of HOA Nazi's too. Probably all out in the suburbs though...
DeleteOh my gosh that is so cool! But an opuntia I would never have thought of doing. And in Oregon, how awesome!
ReplyDeleteI love it! (and the stone wall!)
ReplyDeleteThat wall is full of character too isn't it?
DeleteHow cool!
ReplyDeletewhat a great idea !!!!!!
ReplyDeletepretty cool but ic ant help thinking.....leak
ReplyDeleteHuh...yes, that is interesting. Personally, the stone/brick wall with all the Moss really caught my eye. That is so earthy and nifty!
ReplyDeleteWere you able to determine if that is plywood? Kinda looks like metal in the closer shot. The whole thing has a suburban ranch cum prairie feel to it. Odd, but I like it.
