Last week at this time I was strolling the beach at Lincoln City, Oregon. My family converged in Portland and then we all made the trek to the coast where we celebrated my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary. The weather gods were good to us as we had moody skies...
Sunny skies...
And just enough wind to fly a kite...
Uncle Andrew helped the nephew build the requisite sand castle...
While the plant nut (that would be be) wandered the beach in awe of the aquatic plants and animals washed ashore. I know beach shots are horribly cliche but I can't resist, I was mesmerized,
I think this is called Rockweed.
And this is Feather Boa Kelp.
Sea Palm
Did you spot the lady bug in this shot?
Eventually we tore ourselves away from the beach and headed down to Newport, OR. First stop, a light house.
With some dangerous looking white rocks just beyond.
You probably figured out why they are white?
Ah yes, someone in the Parks Dept thinks they're pretty clever...
Our next stop, the Oregon Coast Aquarium, which had nice plantings and a stream leading up to the entrance.
We're you wondering what that sign said?
I love Sea Anemone and couldn't help thinking about how fabulous they'd be in a water feature in my garden.
Which would only be made fabulouser by the addition of Sea Stars!
Thanks for tagging along on my high-summer beach vacation!

Thanks for taking us along! Loved the pictures of seaweed, especially the closeups which remind me of aliens. What a bummer that there are no fresh water critters like anemones or sea stars that could live in a fresh water garden feature. Slimy string algae doesn't count. Looks like a fun vacation and congrats to your parents!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed coming along. I loved taking those beach pictures and mainly just posted them so I could spend more time looking at them!
DeleteI wish you could raise sea anemone too. They're so prehistoric looking.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the ones at the Zoo here in Portland. I could spend the whole day staring at them.
DeleteCan never get enough of beach photos! I can feel the refreshing breeze and smell the ocean through your post. Looks like a good time was had by all!
ReplyDeleteIndeed it was! Sorry about the ocean smell though, hope it fades...
DeleteBeach shots may be cliche, but it's the next best thing to being there (especially when snapped by a fellow plant nut), so keep those cliches coming. Is it the sea air that creates coastal comedians?
ReplyDeleteIt must be! I figured the first sign was some sort of parks dept humor that they just had to share, but the second one? That was just crazy.
DeleteGreat tour, and I had no idea of the varieties of kelp...though I once lived a mile inland from some of the largest kelp beds in the world! The stream, funny signage, and views out over the ocean are priceless, hardly cliche as far from the ocean as I am.
ReplyDeleteJust how far are you now? Three hours? Four?
DeleteFar...10 hours / 720 miles to Pacific Beach in San Diego! (was 11 hrs / 785 mi from Abq) Or 12 hrs / 850 mi to South Padre Island TX.
DeleteOh my! Obviously my geographical knowledge needs a little work.
DeleteI don't see how they're cliche, any more than say, Agave shots. *cough, cough*
ReplyDeleteI *love* the chocolaty shot above the sea palm! Fantastic photo!
Hey...don't go knocking the agaves! What if I'd included a sunset shot, would that have sent you over the edge?
DeleteCliché? I don't think so. Beautiful? Definitely!
ReplyDeleteThanks Gerhard.
DeleteGreat shots I enjoyed this tour.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you did Karen. How from the beach are you?
Delete50 years is a great achievement.
ReplyDeleteWell done Mr and Mrs Loree's Mum and Dad.
In the past I lived less than a mile from the beach for 3 years and it was fun (boring in the winter when you have just turned 10 though).
Your shots remind me of my childhood - playing around on the beach without a care :)
Isn't it? Not one I'll likely see since we didn't get married until I was 37 yrs old.
DeleteGlad I could take you back for a bit!
Mmmm, you are reminding me that I haven't been to the beach this summer. What a shame! Looks like you had a blast!
ReplyDeleteGet out there girl! (we did)
DeleteWhat a great way to spend a family vacation/50th anniversary celebration. I remember my in-law's celebration years ago as a much more stuffy affair.
ReplyDeleteThe sandcastle is fabulous and, although I've spent much of my life close to the seashore, I for one can't say I've seen many pictures of aquatic plants. Maybe that's an Oregon thing.
My parents don't really stand for stuffy, this was wonderful.
DeleteSo are you saying more aquatic plants wash ashore here? This particular section of the beach was rich with treasures, there were others that were practically empty.
The shot just above the one labelled sea palm, wow! Love beach shots, so calming just looking at them.
ReplyDeleteYou guys make it to the beach fairly regularly don't you?
DeleteWonderful place to celebrate such a special occasion. I wouldn't mind taking home a truck load of seaweed for my garden! We are at Cannon beach enjoying those wonderful rock pools and the puffins. My husband is over the moon about having seen the puffs yesterday.
ReplyDeleteOh man...I haven't been to Cannon Beach in ages, you're so close to Portland! We enjoyed the puffins at the aquarium but didn't see any on the beach, that would have been fun.
DeleteExploration, discovery and wonder are NEVER cliche!
ReplyDeleteThank you, and agreed.
DeleteHappy Anniversary to your parents in the most perfect setting! Beach shots are never cliche. I'm heading off soon for my week at the beach where I park myself in a chair on the sand from sunup to sunset. Most people think I'm unable to relax. The beach is where I prove them all wrong :).
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy your beach get-away Sue!
Deletethe seawwed and the tial pool creatures were facinating
ReplyDeleteSharon you reminded me there were tidal pools near the lighthouse we really wanted to see but our group got sidetracked. Maybe next time...
DeleteHow wonderful, just exactly the kind of beach I love. Great pics and love those sea anemones!
ReplyDeleteThanks Deanne!
DeleteNothing cliché about a day at the beach. We should all be so lucky! Love the Oregon Coast and what a great post!
ReplyDeleteJust today I found myself wishing I were there again...
DeleteI do love a good seascape. Thanks for sharing!
