You smell like dirt!

An insult hurled at a gardener? Nope. A complement actually, if you’re wearing Dirt by Demeter…

My friend JJ recently started carrying these fragrances at her shop, Digs. I went in pretty certain I’d grab Wet Garden, after all that is one of my favorite scents…

But then I had to smell them all! Earthworm…

Tomato…

And of course Mildew…

And I couldn’t decide.

So I went home smelling like Wet Garden to see if it passed the long term test, nah…didn’t love it. I need to go back and spray myself with Mildew. How many times are you gonna read someone say that? Right…never.

    1. I wanted to say something about it being a great Mother's Day gift but then I realized I might sound like a commercial and I didn't want that.

  2. If you sprayed yourself with the third scent pictured, Andrew could say that you're one hot tomato! I've never smelled earthworm before. What fun. I also like the idea of using tillandsias in votive candle holders - so many possibilities!

    1. You've never smelled earthworm? Oh I want to have fun with that but I'm gonna be a good girl.

Did you visit Digs when you were in Portland back when we first met? I remember you said you visited Alberta St but can't remember if that was one of your stops.

    2. Oh the restraint. Impressive. Yup, I sought out Digs that time as I'd read about it on your blog!

  3. Oh my what names! Although they're quite cool names too! Love the packaging and presentation btw. Do let us know if Mildew passes the longevity test.

  4. I think somebody spilled some of one of those in my basement...

...you just have to guess which one. :)

  5. I think the concept is fabulous, and I'm sure the fragrances are fresh and lovely, but I'd have a hard time buying a scent called Mildew. But stranger things have happened: My sister practically twisted my arm to get us to meet her at a restaurant over in the King neighborhood called Grain & Gristle (eeeew.) Now you can't keep us away from G&G!

    1. Andrew had the same reaction to G & G, and loved it!

  6. I bought my daughter Blonde Tabac. Didn't think I could top that, but you just proved me wrong.

    1. And I had to look up Blonde Tabac as I hadn't a clue...

  7. How about "Pond Muck"? Now there is one I would buy :)

  8. How funny and clever. Pond Muck is good. How 'bout "Essence of Compost"?

  9. These are intriguing. Does the tomato one smell like the fruit or the foliage? I like the smell of dirt. Last night I filled my car up with all the plants that I brought down to Jenni (Rainy Day Gardener), and this morning it smelled wonderful! Kind of rainforest-y.

    1. Both and neither. How's that for an answer?

Opening the door of a greenhouse and getting hit with that warm earth smell is indeed one of the best scents on earth, in my opinion.

  10. I would be interested in Essence of Compost. But, rainforest would be a lovely scent too. I will admit, I never thought I would see a fragrance called 'Earthworm'. That is uh, pretty exceptional. Cheers, Jenni

  11. I love, love, love Demeter fragrances! I don't know if they're still making Grass, but I loved it. Dirt was another favorite. Both the spas I worked at in the 90's carried the line and it brought me much joy.

    1. I think once upon a time I owned a bottle of Grass, or maybe I'm confusing it with the Gap scent...which I also loved.

    2. Checking the Demeter website I see they do still make it! If my memory is serving me correctly, the grass fragrance that was (still is?) carried at the Gap was originally made by a small company that was also carried at one of the spas. I LOVED it, along with some of the other scents. They came in an aluminum spray can. I was not happy when they sold out and we could no longer carry it.
