It’s the light, and the “greenness” of it all…

There is a day every year when it hits me, we’re there…it is finally Spring! It’s the quality of light, and a smell in the air.
Well, were not quite there yet. But it is February 1st (we made it through January!) and I did get that Spring-like feeling the other day on a very small scale. I was out in the back garden cutting back and cleaning up and I stopped to soak up the light and happen to looked down on this mix of various Sempervivum, Dwarf mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus 'Nana’) and London Pride (Saxifraga x urbium 'Aureopunctata').
In that little patch I saw the promise of warmth and the joy of time spent outdoors. Windows open, “working” in the garden…ah yes.
Do you know where your flip-flops are? You're going to need them, hopefully soon.

  1. One of the biggest shocks for me in moving to Colorado 11 years ago is that -- well, there's just very little green. Whenever I visit NW Oregon now, I'm blown away by the variety of green.

  2. We are so, so lucky to have a mostly green winter landscape. I love the way you revel in it!

    1. You've got to appreciate what you've been given right? Not that I'd be complaining if instead I was enjoying a much less green (think Arizona) but much sunnier climate.

  3. It's soooo true! I am overjoyed about feb! The worst month is behind us, garden centers will be filling up their stock... It's a legit glimmer of hope!!!! It still can be nasty but at least the hope of spring is more and more a reality!

    1. I read a blog post recently whose author was complaining about February and called it the worse month...made even worse by the fact that it's leap year. That's crazy talk!

  4. For me it's definitely the angle of the sun. It doesn't matter how warm it is in January or early February -- the light still says "winter". I'm not quite there yet, but it's close. Glad I'm not the only one feeling the fever. :-)

    1. I agree, the angle of the sun plays a big role. Which is why I had to take my vision really small to capture that moment.

  5. I'm with Alan, it's the angle of the sun. And of course buds forming on trees and shrubs. One of our stupid Bradford pear trees has already leaved out!!

    1. Usually I could tell you just exactly how much daylight we are gaining each and every day, but I'm trying to lay off the statistical data this year in hopes of not driving my husband crazy.
