What to do when a friend says she wants to buy an agave, and she’s never been to Cistus Nursery? You take her! Cistus is where we found our Yucca Rostrada, Sammy, last year. I was excited to see his brothers and sisters blooming.
In addition to the fabulous plants for sale, they have landscaped the area around the nursery that’s a must for wandering. I visited back in early February to find out how they fared with our extreme winter weather in December. They didn’t appear to be too hard hit, things looked better than in my garden, there was a little damage. They've definitely left winter behind now! Some how we both managed to be controlled shoppers. Denise left with 2 small Agave Americana. I took the plunge and bought the Manfreda ‘Macho Mocha’ that I’d been regretting not buying since the Hardy Plant society sale in April, and an Echium candicans ‘Veriegata’. I bought a small one last fall that perished over the winter and after seeing the fabulous specimen (above - at the beginning of the post) as we walked into the nursery, I had to have another one. Need another reason to visit the nursery? The drive out to Sauvie Island is a nice one, it really is amazing how fast you can leave the city behind and be in the country.
(Keith this post goes out to you in Cistus-less NYC...I feel your pain hope you are still shopping their catalogue!)
