Have you ever set out with the express purpose of taking an "awe walk"? I can't say I've ever used that term, but every walk I take is one.
I didn't realize everyone didn't do this, or then again maybe I did. Andrew walks to walk. I call his walks marches...because nothing distracts him from walking. Whereas when I walk it's all about seeing what there is to see, even if it means slowing down and stopping to take a photo or two.
I always felt a little guilty, like my stopping to smell the roses photograph the pumpkins was somehow less than his marching. But according to the New York Times my awe walks might be even more healthy...read all about it here.

Weather Diary, Oct 13: Hi 65, Low 53/ Precip .18"
I am helpless when I walk. I typically walk fairly fast but I stop endlessly to gaze at my surroundings.
ReplyDeleteI think we could walk well together.
DeleteLike Linda, I walk for the exercise but my eyes keep looking around shamelessly into people's gardens, and when I see something exciting, I pull out my phone. When first looking at that tree turning colors I thought it was a beloved Royal Poinciana, which of course it can't be: wrong zip code and season, but awesome nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteI had to look up Royal Poinciana, it's a beauty!
DeleteI always carry my camera no matter where I walk and I can't even imagine a brisk, no-stopping walk. If we got fall color like that shown in your first shot, I imagine my walks would take hours...
ReplyDeleteOur fall color is lagging behind this year. That tree (at the park at the end of our street) is the exception.
Delete'Moseying' is the only way to go, IMO, and is the basis of shinrin-roku, Japanese forest bathing.
ReplyDeleteSuch a good word!
DeleteThe only reason I will go for a walk is if it is somewhere I can see something. Marching along a major thoroughfare for exercise holds absolutely no appeal. Whereas a walk through a meadow, forest, beach....
ReplyDeleteA beach... oh I do miss the beach...
DeleteI compare my stop-and-gos to a male dog marking territory. I stop at almost every lamppost. And I see photos where most of us see nothing. I think seeing things is the main driver for any walks I take. I had no idea it had such a nice name!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds so much more official doesn't it? To take an "awe walk"...
