Wednesday Vignette, faith

Faith. I have faith that you can see beyond these horrid iPhone photos (why didn't I pull the camera out of my handbag!?) and appreciate what a glorious dark shrub this is...

I believe it's Pittosporum tenuifolium 'County Park Dwarf'. My first sighting was back in 2019 when I stopped by the Pat Calvert Greenhouse at the Arboretum in Seattle. I thought it was just a fluke that it looked so good then, but here it was, a year later (just last Saturday), still shiny and black.

I ventured on through the garden to the greenhouse where there are small plants for sale and what do you know? They had a few tiny (oh so tiny) rooted cuttings available. It was just a couple of bucks so I bought it. Faith. I have faith that someday it will grow up to be visible in my garden. Fingers crossed.

  1. Very cool - what a great find! I have something similar in my garden - P. tenuifolium 'Ebony Giant'. (I know, silly me to put anything with the word "giant" in its name in my garden.) Its leaves open this beautiful frosty kind of green, and mature to black. I love it, even though it promises to get huge. I look forward to seeing what this lovely thing does in your garden!

    1. I had a Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Atropurpureum' that was fabulous when I bought it (dark leaves that is) but always kind of looked sick in my garden. I think it lives at Ricki's now. Hopefully this one will stay here.

  2. I love these challenges. It will be even more precious to you as it grows. What an extraordinary color and texture for the garden it will be when it grows up.

  3. It's wonderful! I have to look for that one (and figure out where to put it after the fact). Fingers crossed that yours thrives.

    1. Too bad Pat Calvert doesn't do mail order. I think Cistus has had it in the past.

  7. I did just see on Dan Hinkley's website that he has this for sale, but I think you have to go to one of the events listed on his site for access. This is part of his Windcliff plant selections. Gorgeous plant!

    1. Dan usually sells at Hortlandia, maybe he'll bring some to Portland.

  8. I have faith in you, too, Loree. You'll have it growing healthy and lush in your garden in no time. And your iPhone photos are great! I've been using mine more lately, too, especially in winter. I don't tolerate the cold well, so...the iPhone is faster and sometimes just fine.

    1. The color was just off in those photos, the phone seems to be going that a lot lately. But thank you!

  9. Cistus had some good sized plants available early last year; I've been kicking myself ever since for resisting buying one. Let that be a lesson to me!

  10. I don't have as much faith, Loree. I would have bought three of them. :)

  11. Gardeners are (mostly) a hopeful bunch. Nurturing a plant from infancy is so exiting. I'm nurturing such a 'stick' of Acer palmatum "Ukigumo", and so far it survive our winter in a pot. Today's picture is the 'before', and I'm sure you'll be showing off this lovely in an 'after' photo in no time.
