I am a Flax addict

For me there is not much that beats a Phormium (New Zealand Flax) for instant presence in the garden. Tall and elegant, sometimes with straight leaves, sometimes with gently curving leaves and (bonus) they’re evergreen, remaining beautiful even in the winter months. So off I went this weekend to buy new plants to replace some I lost over the winter. If flax-destroying winters like last December are a once every 8 or so year occurrence it’s worth it. And the colors! Check out those leaves…fabulous eh…who needs flowers with leaves like that! (oh - they do have flowers, they are rare in our climate but quite unique)

  1. Takes a lot of guts to come out in favor of flax after just about EVERY FLAX IN PORTLAND bit the dust this winter! I admire your tenacity since I'm still recovering from the loss and wondering whether to revisit that heartbreaker again.
