We're back at
Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania, the kick-off location for the
2023 Fling.
I'm wandering through the Conservatory District at Longwood, taking in the splendor of it all.
Aechmea chantinii 'Harvey's Pride'
Fountains were everywhere at Longwood.
Cyrtostachys renda, lipstick palm
Rhapis excelsa 'Variegata', variegated lady palm
Be still my heart! Look at that staghorn fern!
So many cool ferns gathered together...
Aglaomorpha, bear's paw fern
Phlebodium some-somebody.
Close up of the base.
But then there is this...
The most amazing bathroom hallway/green wall.
All I can say is thank god I had to go to the bathroom!
Eventually I tore myself away from the green wall to continue my exploration. Davallia fejeensis 'Major', rabbit's foot fern
When I originally passed by the children's garden I thought "oh hell no"... but thankfully on my second time by I tucked in to see what it was all about.
Wowsa! This is a children's garden I can get behind.
Plumeria, I believe? (at the back)
Be still my heart! A whole row of Quesnelia marmorata 'Tim Plowman'!
So good!
What kid doesn't want to play in water? There was water gushing out of this monster face fountain.
And spraying from the mouths of a turtle and winged creature...
Railing detail.
And a sort of rill/bubbler. I fear I missed so much more than I saw that day, Longwood definitely packed a super horticultural punch!

"Splendor" is a good way to describe it! I was left wondering how that vertical garden wall and the hanging staghorn fern were put together, not that I have any chance of replicating either. As to the Plumeria, I wish I had a glasshouse to put mine in!
ReplyDeleteI've always wondered if those big staghorn orbs grow like that on their own (doubtful) or if there's some human engineering at work.
DeleteI have to agree with Kris. I'd love love a wall like that but it won't happen here. If you want to see the best bathroom interiors, that would be at the John Michael Kohler art facility in Sheboygan, WI. Artists work with Kohler Co. staff to create and construct amazing bathrooms at the museum.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun those bathrooms must be!
DeleteThis is a fern lover's play ground. Mind blowing green wall, glad you had to 'go'. Thanks for the Phlebodium close up at the base: I love those woolly air roots, practically begging to be patted.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what makes the children's garden particularly child'ish. It is perfectly suited to my adult sensibilities.
Chavli
It's very much designed as a play space, there were a couple of kids having a blast while I was walking thru and I almost asked their mom if I could take their photo, one look at her through told me she was about to have a melt down, so I did not.
DeleteEvery detail of this entire garden. I don't usually appreciate conservatories, preferring to be outside (especially in nice weather), but I have to admit that this one is amazing. I LOVED the children's garden especially.
ReplyDeleteI would visit weekly in the winter, what a reprieve from the cold!
DeleteEverything in the conservatory is fantastic. I recently watched a video tour of the conservatory with the curator. Lots of great insight especially around the huge rabbit's foot fern. Apparently there is a pot in the middle somewhere. Wouldn't it be lovely if the journey to the restroom was always as beautiful?
ReplyDeleteWas that Karl in the video tour? I was able to spend a few minutes chatting with him about a few of the plants, he definitely knows his stuff!
DeleteYes it was. He is a font of information and abundant energy
DeleteThank you for taking us there! I hope there is one more post to go!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! And no... that's all I've got on Longwood.
DeleteThe green wall is rich. The children's garden is so playful and well done, how fun - I'm glad you didn't miss it! I'm a fan of all the spheres hanging, how fantastic.
ReplyDeleteWho knew bromeliads could be made into a sphere?
DeleteNow that is a green wall! Not many people can pull one off, not to mention keeping one going for more than a year. Again, they must have awesome, dedicated staff!
ReplyDeleteFor sure they do, so many great gardeners have been in the Longwood programs.
