If you're a regular reader you know I love me some old metal bits that can be re-purposed as a planter. I found this metal vent at Portland's Rebuilding Center.
Super drainage! Actually too much drainage. I added a piece of plastic to cover the wire grid, but still let a little water drain. I also neglected to take a photo of it.
Since I've gone a little Bromeliad mad I tucked in this amazing specimen...
And this one too...
Then I had to add a Trachelospermum asiaticum 'Ogon Nishiki',,,
Because there are two in the dish planters below and I absolutely love them.
The finished vent, all planted up, with a little Tillandsia Usneoides for good measure...
I really should have included a wide-shot, of the whole area under the shade pavilion...but it's my last garden mess, waiting to be cleaned up and dealt with. Thus you only get a close up. There will be more photos later, trust me.
Another vertical surface I've reworked is the "bulletin board" planter. Last year it was planted up with Aeoniums.
I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do this year, then I saw those lust-worthy Begonia's and knew they'd be perfect tucked into the planters.
Begonia 'Curly Fireflush' was joined by good old Dichondra argentea, which will add about a half inch, to an inch, of length a week, as long as I keep it well watered.
I think they make a fetching combination.
That's my vertical gardening update...have you been doing any VG?

Your imagination and creativity know no bounds. I continue to be in awe.
ReplyDeleteIf I ever have time, I'll recreate your vent planter. That would look cool under our bay trees, and bromeliads would do well there in the summer.
Thank you, and I hope you do. I would love to see it.
DeleteBeautimous! Love your brand of heavy metal. Curly fireflush is one of my faves. Hmmm...more begonias in the Danger Garden. Haven't done much VG other than throwing vines all over the place. (Isn't VG that thing that we were warned about in that movie we were shown in the sixth grade? I hear that a shot of penicillin takes care of it.)
ReplyDeleteHave you been able to overwinter 'Curly Fireflush'? Others have told me it was difficult. My school wasn't as forward thinking as yours!
DeleteAll are beautifully done, Loree! The use of the metal vent is very clever. All in all, it looks like a wonderfully curated display,
ReplyDeleteThanks Kris, hopefully that's what others see, not a metal recycling center dumped in a garden.
DeleteI actually heard Ol' Blue Eyes' version of "My Way" in a salvage shop the other day, so your post is timely. Love this! I'm taking more of a shine to that trachelospermum after initial impressions that it broke my variegation rules -- a little too busy. Looks great with a plain backdrop. Isn't June grand for puttering? I wish we could bottle up June for a January pick-me-up.
ReplyDeleteI too once shied away from that one, because of the busy variegation. It seems less garish in the shade.
DeleteI love what you did with that metal vent! Such a creative repurpose, you clever thing. The Begonias look great in your bulletin board too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Alison, I appreciate that.
DeleteLove the way the bulletin board group looks above all that greenery/fernery below. No VG here. Doing the opposite. Took down a row of three trees earlier this week. Photos to come next week.
ReplyDeleteYikes! Taking down trees is a big garden changer.
DeleteNo surprise that these are artistic, well-balanced and just plain cool! Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tim!
DeleteLove, love, love them all. You have such great eye.
ReplyDeleteYou're very kind Jenny. Any chance you might visit Portland in the future?
DeleteI love your planters, you are always so inventive
ReplyDeleteThanks Spiky O!
DeleteDitto all the comments above. You are so creative! That bromilead is a beauty.
ReplyDeleteI am going to do some wooly pockets for breakfast nook privacy screening. You've inspired me to get going on it. Thanks!
There will be pictures I hope?
DeleteNow whenever I see oddball metal scraps here and there, I think "Loree could come up with something fabulous to do with that!"
ReplyDeleteThank you for the vote of confidence!
DeleteWhat can I say that hasn't already been said? I'll say it anyway. The new vent planter is great! As are the plants that went into it, especially the Vriesea. I love the new begonias, too. My latest "vertical gardening" was planting a Phyllostachys viridis 'Robert Young'. Ok, not qhat you meant by vertical gardening, but it does grow up!
ReplyDeleteThank you! And I enjoyed reading your note to Kate on FB about your latest vertical addition. Especially the vision of you driving tall bamboo through the city and getting looks.
DeleteWe love them Loree, very cool, chic, and stylish!
ReplyDeleteThanks guys!
