Andrew and I are going to be at
The Other Plant Sale next Saturday, May 24th. If you've never been to a T.O.P.S. event, this is the year to go! There will be over 60 different vendors with plants and plant related items, and it's free to attend. More info
here and at the end of this post.
I'll have a few Upcycle and Plant creations on offer...
Pyrrosia serpent $35
Andrew carved this serpent from a twig, it already resembled a snake, but he refined it.
He slithers across a bed of textured moss in an wooden, oval, bowl measuring 15" long.
He is free to roam about though, as serpents do.
The fern is a Pyrrosia lingua, which grows by creeping rhizomes, you can see them here.
Volcano wanderer $25
One of Andrew's carved figures wanders among active volcanoes (barnacles) that are spewing tillandsia, and a spent volcano (a limpet shell) that's home to a small orchid, Platystele-repens (ovatilabia).
None of these pieces are attached. The rusted metal circle (5" wide) sits on a vintage metal
Lily-Tulip Cup Corp holder (a paper cup that typically held a frozen desert).
The shells, figure and plants are all loose so you can rearrange them as you desire. This also makes it easier to soak the tillandsia and mist the orchid.
Agave marmorata dish planter $35
I can't put together a group of containers without including a dish planter, the form just speaks to me.
This agave cluster is a mass of Agave marmorata, there's no way they could be separated so I decided to celebrate them as a clump of spiky goodness. The dish is 11" wide and with the base it's about 12" to the tip of the tallest spike.
The dish is held to the metal tube with a trio of powerful magnets.
Blue oil fern pickaxe $35
Another of my favorite Upcycle and Plant offerings, the pickaxe as planter. This time it's planted up with a blue oil fern, Microsorum thailandicum.
The soil is contained in a metal pouch, the axe measures 17" long.
Yellow spike towers (an Indio Metal Arts container) $35
I bought this container from
Indio Metal Arts at a function at
McMenamins Edgefield several years ago. I've loved it, but it's time to part with it. For this event I've rounded up a pair of yellow spiky plants: Agave Cornelius and Austrocephalocereus estevesii (12" tall to the spikiest spike on the cactus).
There are small drainage grooves around the bottom of each planting tower.
Spiky!
Aloe barberae (tree aloe) and planter $25
I've decided to part with this aloe and container from my personal collection. It needs someone who can help it achieve it's full potential (a bigger container to start with). As currently planted container and plant measure 27" tall.
It's showing a little winter stress having been in my basement up until recently, but once outdoors it greens up and starts pushing out new growth.
Andrew (
@boominghoots on Instagram) has over 20 pictures he's bringing to the sale—some of which I wish could stay at home, but no, he's intent on bringing them all—and they'll all be on offer for $40 (we'll be taking cash and Venmo only). These pictures are 4" x 6".

How I wish I could attend! Both your offerings and Andrew's are wonderful. My favorite is the Pyrrosia with the snake. Have a great time!
ReplyDeleteI love all your and Andrew's piece. Seriously, this is incredible stuff at fantastic prices!
ReplyDeleteWow, you are both so talented. I love all of it, but I'd buy the pickaxe with blue oil fern. I really like the Indio Metal Arts planters as well. How fun, I wish I was closer.
