Agave sale! Agave sale! Agave sale!

This is news too good not to share…Cistus Nursery is having an Agave sale! From their website: “We're having a SALE on Agaves! We have too many and you perhaps don't have enough, so every Agave on our mail order list is 40% off through April”
Of course I want to debate the fact they think anyone can have too many Agaves, but I guess that’s beside the point because the really important part is that they’re 40% off! Here’s the link to their mail order list, just page down to the Agave section. If you need a bit more info/pictures most of these are on plant lust. Also those of us lucky enough to be within driving distance of Cistus can take advantage of the deal in person, but you’re cautioned to call ahead if there is something specific that you’re hoping to get because not every Agave that is on the mail order list is available in the retail nursery. If you call ahead then there is a good chance they can locate it and pull it for you…how nice is that?
(photos from team plant lust visit to Cistus on 3/3/12...and yes there were more Agaves that you can't see!)

  1. question...if I leave in portland does everything they sell "work" with our environment? I want to add agaves to our yard but a bit scared!

    1. No, not everything. The plants are all labeled with their zone and temperature info. If you ask they are very good about telling you what's risky and what's just down right foolish. Agave bracteosa and Agave parryi are good bets.

  2. Lucky you. It is still a bit early for plant sales hear, although there are the odd clear out of last years stocks type sales.

    1. There are several "clear out of last years stock" sales going on around town but this one is so much better than that!

  3. Now I think I should have gotten more. I might have to go back. Thanks, Loree.

  5. Any idea of the size of the mail order plants? I suppose the list link has more info...

    1. Alan it depends on which ones you're after. For instance I bought a few fairly rare ones that were tiny. More common ones are larger....say 10" wide (total generalization). Even though I know the Cistus folks are all amazing people who will send you the best they can I also know when you're doing mail order it's best to expect plants smaller than you hope for.

  7. No, you can never have too many agaves. I'm very tempted by Agave ovatifolia 'Frosty Blue' and Agave bracteosa 'Monterrey Frost'.

    1. Thank you! That's what I thought. You know Cistus is the only place I've seen Agave bracteosa 'Monterrey Frost'...they are beautiful! I've not risked putting mine outside but I bet you could get away with it.

  9. Plant sales always makes my heart skip a beat! Great haul there! I'm still on the look out for an Agave bracteosa 'Monterrey Frost' at a reasonable price. The few available here go for silly money still.
