The weather could not have been better, the Aesculus californica, California buckeye, was beautiful against the blue sky.
Sweet! I didn't plant an Echium candicans 'Star of Madeira' this year.
I do love this plant. Maybe it will be a mild winter and theirs will be around to bloom next year.

I came home with three plants, an Aechmea x Billbergia, which is already potted up and spending time on my desk (and I've been told this may be x Cryptbergia 'Red Burst').

I need to start a "Loree list" with plant names and links to your posts, because every time you visit a garden or nursery you capture some plant that I immediately want to have. Many obviously won't work here but a lot could, like that Blechnum spicant. I believe that is hardy here and certainly a beauty judging by your photo.

DeleteLove that last photo with the little Agave on the left (either Victoria or Ferdinand, I can never tell). My Pyrrosia sheareri has been growing outside... are you going to keep yours protected?
ReplyDeleteThe Pyrrosia will spend winter in the SPG, only because it's not yet in the ground.
DeleteI'm always impressed with how big agaves can get when well potted. Agave parrasana 'Meat Claw' is now on my wish list. That one is just gnarly!! Loree List.....why yes, I have one of those too! You are the Queen Plant Pusher. Muah!

DeleteVisiting Cistus is always a treat and seeing all the great plants in the closed-to-the-public greenhouses makes it extra special! The new additions to your plant family are sweet. I wish I lived closer to Cistus. Maybe Sean would consider opening a second store up this way - Cistus North.

DeleteIn September I took 4 cuttings from Gail Barnard's Daphne x houtteana. One is growing. I'm so psyched. I so need that plant in my life. I also got an Astelia 'Red Devil' from Secret Garden growers. It's going to stay in a pot in a protected spot until spring. Looks like you had a great time at Cistus. So many lovely plants.

DeleteOh! Daphne x houtteana! That's the plant you said I needed for my Ruby Red Death Bed, I think. Are they selling them, or were those in your pictures in the back greenhouses being grown on?
ReplyDeleteI believe the Daphne x houtteana were flagged as on hold with the plan to make more, but an email to Cistus would get you on a list for when they're available...

I can say they are! I've been out there a couple of times in January and it's a pretty nice place to be. I don't think the Daphne x houtteana were actually for sale yet, but you could ask to get on a list...
DeleteGosh, I love this place. So many cool plants and even though many in these photos are probably just mashups of plants put in the non-public houses, there are some stunning combinations. I wish the northeast had greenhouses like this!
