We moved to Portland in 2004 and rented for a year while we figured out what part of town we wanted to live in. When we finally bought our house the market was out of control, you had to bid the day the house was listed, and for a sum significantly over the asking price. The area in which we settled seemed to be on the verge of happening, then the great recession hit and that went on hold. Things finally started to move again about the time Old Salt Marketplace opened in 2013...
Since then it's been crazy how fast it's all changing. The most recent addition to the 'hood is Fabius Grange, a fabulous vintage shop ("foraged and found") owned by our friend Deb Zori.
Deb's been selling at a space in the Grand Marketplace for years, and has been part of many other vintage markets around town. I am thrilled to have her first "brick and mortar" space so close. That's it below, the weekend she opened. Proper signage is on the way.
She's got a strong sense of style and a very good eye.
It was hard to walk away from this. Only $45 for pot, stand and plant!
I just kept asking myself where I would put it...
Isn't the edge on this bowl fantastic?
So much fabulous pottery...
Always be the blue elephant. The world needs more blue elephants.
The green and black artwork makes me wish we had more open space on our walls.
And I have to admit, even though I took this photo I didn't fully appreciate the painting on the left until now. It's all sorts of wonderful.
I'm up in the loft space looking down on all the fabulous offerings. Hi Deb!
I look forward to many more visits!
After we visited Deb we had brunch at Old Salt and then wandered across the street to visit Portland Bloem (which I first wrote about here), we were reminded the Farmer's Market opened the next week...
Right by Deb's place. That's got to be some good traffic!
Oh ya...they're speaking my language!
When I first discovered Portland Bloem the outdoor nursery space was just being built out. Now it's in full swing...
And the plants are top-notch.
Next door to Portland Bloem is the Cully Farm Store, how cool is that? We didn't have time to look around that day, but I look forward to returning soon.
Walking home I couldn't help but notice some updated plantings in front of another shop.
Yep, things are definitely looking up...

How nice to have such things happening near you. deb's shop looks great. Much to lust after.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, it could be dangerous to happen in there very often.
DeleteWe should always strive to discover the blue elephant within...
ReplyDeleteVintage shops overwhelm me: I love so much of what I see, like that midcentury-modern chair. The best of luck to your Deb in her new shop.
I know that overwhelmed feeling...and must admit I love it!
DeleteYour friend's shop looks great! And that's the kind of neighborhood I love. I haven't lived in a neighborhood like that since my years as a renter in Santa Monica and, even that neighborhood is no longer what it was as chain stores gradually pushed out the quirky, interesting stores I used to traffic.
ReplyDeleteThe most walkable neighborhood I've ever lived in was Capitol Hill in Seattle. Everything was within walking distance, I was spoiled.
DeleteYowsa, so many treasures within walking distance of your house! Your neighborhood is really happening!
ReplyDeleteI'm loving it!
DeletePositive happenings around the 'hood are all good.
ReplyDeleteWe won't talk about the negative ones.
DeleteWonderful to watch a neighborhood blossom!
ReplyDeleteIndeed!
DeleteWow, very cool shops. Deb is very talented at arranging and creating vignettes. I am sharing this post with my sister that lives in OR. Don't you just hate it when you run out of room for cool stuff : )
ReplyDeleteYes I do! And then there's the husband who think we should be living in an even smaller house...
DeleteVery cool. Your friend does has a good eye. Anyone who throws Tillandsia around has my vote!
ReplyDeleteShe is good with the Tillandsia accents isn't she?
DeleteIsn't it just wonderful when you all these cool shops starting to open in your neighbourhood, and so near to you? Your friends new store is inspiring, was just saying out loud here that I'd love to open something similar to that here.
ReplyDeleteYou'll have to take us to these places when we're there, pretty please...
Oh definitely...we're gonna have so much fun when you're here!
DeleteWow, love that serrated edge bowl. What a find!
ReplyDeleteI intentionally didn't pick it up to check the price, for fear I would have been pulling out the wallet...
DeleteOh I love that neighbourhood, next time I get to N Mississippi Ave (hopefully in the next Month), I will take a ride along NE Killingsworth and have a look anew.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! I hope you enjoy it all.
DeleteI could go for a blue elephant.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if it's still there?
DeleteOh my, Loree...it's booming! How lucky are you? At least it's all cool businesses, I am so jealous. That's something I do miss about Portland - walking, mostly, but also good shopping. Cully neighborhood seems to be getting more interesting shops, too.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the reasons I could never be a country girl, I love having things like this around me.
