There are these places and things I drive by every 5 weeks or so on the way home from getting my hair cut. Last week I finally stopped to take pictures, so I could share them with you.
These metal pipes (sewer?) were cut and placed at the corner of this large lot, I assume to be planted up.
I love them, I covet them.
I can't wait to see what they plant in them. Of course I'm hoping for Agaves (like in Renee's pipes) but I'm not holding my breath for that.
Parking the car and venturing out to take photos allowed me to see this interesting hunk of metal further up the street, in their hellstrip. What the heck?
I'm very curious what this will end up as.
There was another, smaller, life-saver shaped thing too.
Luckily I will be able to keep an eye on what develops here.
Just down the street, these partial fence pieces have been up for years. At first I thought they were only the beginning and something would soon fill the voids, but no. This is it.
The inside view...
Perhaps it's arty blocking of their windows as seen from the neighbor's houses? That's the best I can dream up. What do you think?
Finally, this portal in a rock wall is on a very busy street. I've never seen the metal gate ajar, but I do watch all manner of debris build up behind it. I realized after taking this photo from my car window that I have no idea what the house above looks like. Have I never looked up? Or can you not see the house from the street? That's a question I hope to answer on the way back from my next haircut.

It seems that some questions will be answered as spring approaches, like the metal pipe planters. That last picture though is totally mysterious: was there ever a passage way behind the gate? And if not, what is that space meant for?
ReplyDeleteWhen is your next hair appointment?
The last one is something you might come across in England. An abandoned entry where the wall behind has fallen down. That smooth metal circle carefully placed on wooden blocks to protect it? Surely it is a water feature of some kind. Or at least that is what I would be using it for. A pile of large pebbles in the center and water spilling over. Like you, I see clay and metal items lying around and think of how I cold use them myself. I once saw an old concrete donut outside a shop. Clearly it had once protected something but no more. I really want to buy it but no one at the shop knew who it belonged to. I bet it's still there.
ReplyDeleteI was going to say the large ring was for a water feature too! (But I want it to be for a hobbit-style gate)
DeleteWhat if it disappears into the house and we never find out?
DeleteThis is all very interesting. My thoughts on the fence pieces are that perhaps they planned to grow some vine or climber on these but never did, and I agree, they are probably to facilitate privacy. The black looking metal planters wouldn't work for me with the plants I grow in our hot Texas climate but I, too, am interested in what they do with them. Finally, I covet that mysterious metal gate in the rock wall.--So very cool...Reminds me of a mysterious European garden.
ReplyDeleteYa, if that gate were mine I would have to do something with it!
DeleteMaybe it's the entrance to The Secret Garden and Mary Lenox has already pulled the foliage back to reveal it. I am guessing those fences are for privacy but I would go crazy and feel caged staring at them. So many ways to use plants for screening and to direct people's gaze elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteYES! Caged. That's the perfect description.
DeleteFollow-ups are definitely in order. With respect to the odd wood fence pieces, could it be that the owners are trying to manage their own views from inside? Although, if that was the case, why wouldn't they plant something more interesting than lawn?
ReplyDeleteExactly...
DeleteI love that metal gate - looks really old. The fence pieces are rather odd. Maybe headlights coming down the street needed blocking??
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting idea. I wouldn't have guessed it but perhaps. If I'm ever over there after dark I'll have to check it out.
DeleteIs that especially luxuriant moss on the stone wall, or...? I can see it's ivy on the left. Something else to investigate on your next haircut day.
ReplyDeleteMoss, it's winter in Portland so...
DeleteLooking forward to what time and further observation reveal.
ReplyDeleteMe too!
DeleteThe metal gate is wonderfully old and mysterious. The fences are just plain odd.
ReplyDeleteOdd indeed.
DeleteOh, now I'm curious what they will plant in their pipes too! Please let us know when you follow up!
ReplyDeleteMaybe I should go guerrilla plant an agave?
DeleteWell, it's all very mysterious. Could those giant pipe things be waiting for installation into a sump pump or pipeline? The lifesaver things turn out to be giant gaskets? The morse code fencing (dot dot dash) looks kind of weird.
ReplyDeleteNo, they're definitely planters. I love the "dot dot dash" comparison!
