The subject of this week's WV is Arthropodium candidum 'Maculatum'...
Brown speckles and white flowers, on a New Zealand native that prefers part shade and even moisture.
I've grown this one before and sadly it disappeared after a cold winter. But it makes a great vignette while it's still around.

That's fabulous! Took me a moment to realize the flowers weren't peeking through from another plant. I've tried brown Carexes with no luck. They offer such a great color contrast with so many things in the garden.
ReplyDeleteI've got a couple others in deeper shade, their flowers aren't so striking.
DeleteWhat a great plant! I love the speckles. Too bad it's not hardy.
ReplyDeleteIt's plenty hardy, until it's not.
DeleteA groovy plant that works very well with the companions in your garden, especially the saxifrage. Too bad it doesn't stay around longer. If you're a fan of brown grasses that are quite hardy, I'd be happy to send you a chunk of sod from my lawn;-)
ReplyDeleteYou're very generous Peter.
DeleteIt's lovely when it bulks up like yours. Couldn't get this to thrive in our garden.
ReplyDeleteWe'll see how long this one sticks around.
DeleteThat's a wonderful plant! I wonder why Arthropodiums aren't more commonly sold in nurseries? The only place I've ever found A. cirratum is via mail-order from Annie's and I've never seen your delightful specimen anywhere.
ReplyDeleteI've only ever seen it on offer from Xera plants, a local grower.
DeleteWhat's not to love about this plant?
ReplyDeleteThat it's not hardier?
DeleteSo cute! I have a little one, but far from as nice as yours. They are such odd little plants!
ReplyDeleteThis one was newly planted this spring, it's settled in nicely!
DeleteLove the speckles. Funny how polkadots are so rare on foliage.
ReplyDeleteWhich makes them all the more fun when you find them!
DeleteThat's 1 very cool plant.
ReplyDeleteIt volunteered all over the place last summer. This year: nothing. Such a charmer, if somewhat quixotic.
ReplyDeleteOh how I love this. Might be time to buy more stuff to lug in and out of the house over winter....
