I planted one at Chester Cathedral many years ago but cannot get access to it. It was lifted as a 3' bare rooted from my garden in June and established by an ancient technique known as grouting used by the trade which relies on the rapid production of root hairs thus establishing the plant quickly. I have propagated E. c. Norquinco Valley by
adventitious buds for the roots, severing them from the parent in October and planting the following May by the same technique. They are highly successful by seed but it needs double dormancy treatment in organic matter and it grows like cress.
If anyone can point the where I can get E. c. I live in South of UK, with a long gently sloping garden that faces North West. The end of the garden is surrounded by trees & the soil is sandy & bands of gravel in some areas. I have tried placing by the back fence behind a small yew. I know they will grow in this region as I had an established one in my previous garden that I fell in love with.Uksuzyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11390007538225066779noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1018965493805276234.post-63786578572940662172015-05-12T20:29:46.158-07:002015-05-12T20:29:46.158-07:00It's looking great. Thanks for posting this as my little three foot Embothrium has lost nearly all its leaves after having three or four flowers last spring and setting seed (which I collected). The stems and branches look good so I guess they are semi evergreens in our climate. We did have a very mild Nov. then a short cold snap before it began dropping. Looks like we're into another one over the next few days as an Arctic front blows in. Wish my little friend luck! Hope you are enjoying your vacay. Cheers, Neil Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1018965493805276234.post-40419810352815236432014-12-28T19:19:03.639-08:002014-12-28T19:19:03.639-08:00I was going to say something about your tree going...I was going to say something about your tree going dormant being a sign that it's a hardier form and is probably maturing, but I see John already covered that. Same thing happens with oaks and our native red huckleberry. Oaks keep their dead leaves on through winter until they reach maturity. Red huckleberry seedlings grow low to the ground with shiny, evergreen leaves for a few years and then they start to send up long, upright shoots with thinner, matte green, deciduous leaves. I'd guess your Embothrium is probably going to bloom in 2015! The lack of severe cold temps allowed it to go dormant at its own pace rather than being damaged by a sudden cold snap.

I hope my little flame trees make it through the cold predicted for this week. I should probably check to see if my parents have left them covered from the last cold period or if they need to be covered again. They're no bigger than yours started out as.Evan Beanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06732413653862912387noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1018965493805276234.post-45570292753070420472014-12-28T11:51:49.640-08:002014-12-28T11:51:49.640-08:00Yes you can, anytime.
