Wednesday Vignette, opuntia patch

I am always thrilled when I spot a new-to-me patch of opuntia. These are in SE Portland, just a block off a street I travel all the time...

So spiky! I'm not bending to take these photos, the plants were at and above my eye-level, at the top of a sort of rock and wood wall.

This was my favorite part, the opuntia pad growing through the stump.

Thus I suppose this photo is my actual "Wednesday Vignette"...

I wish I'd kept better track of all the different opuntia patches I've seen around Portland, there are an amazing—to me at least—quantity of them.

  1. Very cool. Surprised opuntia do well in Portland. Would have thought it too wet for them.

  2. That patch looks larger than those we have at my local botanic garden!

  3. We have a neighbor move in last summer. They created an opuntia patch in their front garden. Interesting choice, we don't see many here.

    1. How fun! I wonder if they moved from somewhere they're more common?

  4. Wow - the one growing out of a log... I would expect a fern doing that, but definitely not an opuntia - LOL!

  5. The stump with the pad growing through it really adds some charm to that!

    1. Charm and opuntia are not often used in the same sentence...

  6. "Portland can grow everything" - from a former colleague of mine in Arizona. Some of those pics look like our native Opuntia engelmannii, except healthier...
