Bloomday — June 2018

June 15th, summer (!) and the garden is strutting its stuff (oh I know, summer doesn't technically begin until the solstice next week, but come on, it's summer!). Abutilon Nuabyell is rather floriferous, it makes me quite happy.

Santolina chamaecyparissus 'Lemon Queen' is producing as well.

Callistemon sieberi is winding down, but at least it's still looking good. Callistemon virdiflorous managed to squeeze its bloom cycle in between Bloomdays, it's nothing but expired brown blooms now.

The blooms of Callistemon ‘Woodlander's Hardy Red’ are just opening.

This was an amazing year for the Sarracenia flowers. There are only a few left now, this red bloom will have to represent all the others (the green were my favorite).

The Embothrium coccineum is STILL blooming, it's a powerhouse. Notice the cloudy sky, we're experiencing a cool and cloudy streak before the sun returns to warm us into the high 90's next week. The clouds made for nice photo taking.

This Aechmea (Bromeliad) which I just bought at Rare Plant Research last month is blooming. I had no idea it was fixing to push this out so soon.

Delosperma 'Jewel of Desert Topaz'

Grevillea 'Ned Kelly' (in a container, wouldn't make it through a winter here in the ground).

Grevillea rivularis, in the ground and hasn't ever blinked at anything our winters have thrown at it.

I was bummed there weren't any open Passiflora 'Amethyst Jewel' flowers to share.

But then I spotted this!

Parahebe perfoliata

My first sweet pea flower! Lathyrus odoratus some something or other. Smells so good!

Lilium Asiatic Landini, growing in one of the driveway stock-tanks... intended to be used as cut flowers. I've cut one stem, I need to get creative.

Aloe aristata, two flowers on this one and one on another plant. Yay!

One of my Acca sellowiana (pineapple guava) is absolutely covered in buds. The other plant doesn't have a single one. What's up with that? And why wouldn't any of them open for Bloomday?

My Bougainvillea fairy-god-father visited again this year and brought me two plants. The pink one...

And a pinky/orange one. I love them...

The Amsonia hubrichtii flowers have faded to white (from blue).

Clematis recta 'Purpurea Select'

Indigofera amblyantha

I love the green balls of Dianthus barbatus 'Green Trick', especially because Anna gifted me this plant after we lost Lila. She wrote "When in bloom, it’ll be round, cute and furry - just like Lila" how sweet is that? Makes me get teary-eyed and smile at the same time.

Eryngium proteiflorum, yes, it really is silver.

All the Echium russicum spires sort of tipped over after last weekend's rain. I thought this one looked especially good cozied up to the Grevillea x gaudichaudii  (which is taking a short bloom break).

The Lomatia tinctoria is covered in flowers this year.

I'm so bummed I missed the first Opuntia basilaris 'Bugsy' bloom. Luckily there looks to be another coming soon.

And I'll wrap up this Bloomday with the unopened Pachystegia insignis flower. I reminder that there are more flowers to enjoy in the coming weeks and months. Visit Carol at May Dreams Gardens for links to all the bloggers posting this June Bloomday!

  2. It's so frustrating when flowers don't open on the Bloom Day schedule. Maybe they have a mind of their own. Those fuzzy green Dianthus barbatus are fun flowers! It doesn't feel like summer today, but in a few days we are supposed to get hot, so I know you are too. But unlike me, you're looking forward to it.

    1. They'd first predicted triple digits for next week, but they've down graded to just the 90's...I'm glad. That would be a little much!

  6. Like you, I'm looking forward to the hot weather but do hope we get a nice big drenching of rain before June ends. The ground is already very dry. Delightful blooms and a nice promise of more to come all summer long!

    1. Did you guys get rain last weekend? It hit here and in Spokane so I assumed that you did. Not that it qualified as drenching. It is SO DRY out there.

  7. The photo of Embothrium coccineum had me looking it up again, even though I knew I'd done that before. Sadly, its high water diet puts it out of reach. The green flowers of the Dianthus offer a perfect celebration of Lila's life - they're unique and beautiful just like her!

    1. I don't ever water the Embothrium coccineum, but then again I do water the tiny lawn that is near...so I'm sure it gets some of that. Thanks for mentioning Lila.

  8. So many blooms! They are all beautiful but I like the pink/orange bougie.

  9. Love seeing the Callistemon blooms open. Never would have anticipated how they begin. Is L. Landini in water in the stock tank or growing in soil? I just bought a couple of new Landini because the rest of mine have either been eaten or just disappeared.

    1. The lilies are in soil. Only one of my twelve stock tanks is full of water, the rest are all soil filled.

  11. Oh you have some select items there this month Loree..I'm partial to the Eryngium and the Clem recta.

    1. I have mixed feelings about the Clem recta. And why do I have success with it and yet I can't get a big-flowered Clematis to be happy here?

  12. Happy GBBD. Your garden is so exotic - well documented - and beautiful.

  13. The Passiflora flower is indeed a jewel, but for me, the lowly Sweet Pea takes the crown: its fragrance knocks my socks off and has no rivals. Acca sellowiana supposed to have eatable fruit. Did you ever try it?

    1. I have tried them! (the flowers) They're very sweet. This year's crop is finally large enough I might actually get to use them on a salad or something.

  15. Such cool blooms, Loree! Both those Bougainvillea are just fantastic, but the second one is flooring me. I love them so much, but have never thought I could grow them here. Yours must go inside in winter? Happy (belated) Bloom Day!

  18. I agree with you. It does not matter what the calendar says, it is already summer! Everything is beautiful in spite of the heat!

  19. You have lots of colors going on there, i thought first oh you have lots of yellows! But as i slide on, the colors are truly wonderful, magentas and blues. I wish to have them as i am tired of mostly reds and orange.
