Wednesday Vignette, I don't know if I should be happy or sad

I've got to admit it's been awhile since I've spent any time in the shopping district of downtown Portland. Last week I was there, buying an anniversary gift for Andrew (#13 last Monday!), and I walked past this...

At first I was extremely sad. This poor Euphorbia pseudocactus (I think) looks so out of place, so abandoned and potentially doomed to death (some say it's hardy to USDA Zone 9, others say Zone 8).

Then I was happy thinking about the fact someone planted it here. This style of planter is used throughout the downtown core, but there's no way this was planted by a city employee. This was guerrilla gardened and I'm rooting for it!

  1. I was driving by a number of those city managed planters the other week, and I was totally embarrassed to see how crummy they looked. Thank heavens for guerrilla gardeners, but I agree it looks a bit sad. I hope it makes it through the winter!

    1. Ya there were some others I saw with more "climate appropriate" plants that still looked pretty darn sad.

  2. Maybe that gardener reads blogs and will thus make an effort to help it through the winter or to be inspired to plant something hardier.

    1. I just looked at a map to see if my assumption about direction was correct. Hopefully this little guy will get some decent sun in the coming, cold, weeks. All that cement will help, I hope.

  3. Definitely bittersweet! I have been known to water plants from my thermos when I see them dry like this. I imagine this time of year it should get adequate water.

    1. Laurin Lindsey, guerrilla waterer! Ya it shouldn't have to worry about water, this weekend could be trying though as the temperatures drop considerably.

  7. Poor thing, I envision someone taking it home from their office, and deciding to planting it in that empty pot, hoping it’ll have a better chance there. Instead of tossing it in the bin.

  8. What a good term this is, Guerrilla Gardening. There may be a meme hidden in it. I wonder if the planter was left near the recycling bins to be picked up and tossed.
Happy Lucky 13 to you and Andrew.

    1. I wish I could take credit for the term guerrilla gardening, but I cannot. That planter probably weighs more than a hundred pounds, so I doubt it. There are several of the same style all around downtown. They have to be heavy to keep the thieves away.
