Colorblocking

Another scene just off Sunset Boulevard, in Los Angeles. Aqua and Orange, with Aloes.

No graffiti? What a blessing.

Oh wait, the ghost of graffiti is present.

The slightly drought stressed coloring of the Aloes is a nice match for the orange paint.

Sadly some of them are also sporting the orange paint.

  1. That's a nice little nook! The orange paint mistake: inspiration for Kosmic Kactus?

  2. I like the orange, but I hate the aqua. It reminds me of a 1960s psychiatric hospital for some reason. Yellow would have looked nice next to the orange :-).

    1. Gerhard, you promised never to speak of our days at the psychiatric hospital. Oh well, the secret's out now.

    3. D***, and I tried so hard all these decades not to let it slip.

    1. I thought it odd they didn't just cut off the painted leaves.

  4. It's so funny you photographed this building! My friend Maurice Harris is a dance instructor there! He is also a flower enthusiast, as he owns Bloom and Plume, a high-end florist. His creations are beautiful and unique. Check out his Instagram! https://www.instagram.com/bloomandplume/?hl=en For what it's worth, I like the aqua. The orange on the plants is too bad...

  5. You find such interesting color combinations! The orange paint will come off of the aloes sooner or later. Wonder what color the blooms will be and how they'll go with/clash with the orange.

    1. Ah...perhaps that was the inspiration for the orange?

  6. I'm enjoying your LA posts. I spent a summer there when I was younger, and some of these scenes are helping me reminisce. Sometimes colors and styles don't change much, but in this case and in the setting I find it curiously uplifting. Wouldn't want it in my garden, but it sure looks warmer than my garden right now. ;-)

    1. Warmer than mine too! I would love to have a big cement or stucco wall to paint.

  7. At least the orange paint on the Aloe was not intentional, and the rain we got might peel some of it off.

    1. True, unlike (as Alan pointed out) those hideous Kosmic Kactus.

  8. I wonder if you'd have even noticed the wall if it hadn't been for succulents...

  9. Very fun! Check out Luis Barragán for more color fun. He was a Mexican architect - one of my faves...

    1. He's a good one and I've looked to those iconic images of his work to try and reconcile pink and orange combos.

  10. I love that planting of the cacti and succulents under the acqa wall.(I'm trying not to associate it with a psych hospital but I can be rather impressionable)

    1. One of the dorm rooms I lived in was painted a blue/green that I think of as psych hospital color. This, by comparison, is much nicer.

  11. I also enjoyed the palette of paint colors around LA, especially the pastels.
