Holiday cartoon déjà vu...

When I last visited Marbott's Greenhouse & Nursery (to take photos for the Poinsettia Challenge post), I was struck by a strange sense of déjà vu as I rounded the corner headed towards the poinsettia greenhouse...

Do you see it too?

Now of course there wasn't any snow in my version, but use your imagination.

Did you know the Frosty the Snowman Christmas special was based on the song? In other words the song came first, then the animated television special. I had no idea! It first aired on December 7th, 1969. (source)

"This special marked the first use of traditional cel animation (as opposed to stop-motion animation) for Rankin/Bass in a Christmas special. Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass wanted to give the show and its characters the look of a Christmas card, so Paul Coker, Jr., a greeting card and Mad magazine artist, was hired to do the character and background drawings..." Marbott's just got even more magical...

  1. Marbott's is forever changed in my mind because of this post. Next time I'm there, I'll be looking for Frosty!

    1. You won't see Frosty, because that's where he died (temporarily -- spoilers!)

  2. I haven't watched that cartoon in years and years. I didn't even remember that there was a greenhouse full of poinsettias in it.

  3. But there was the Golden Book from the early 1950's .... the animation is just so wrong! LOL. Like this http://www.biblio.com/book/frosty-snowman-annie-north-bedford-illustrator/d/400915795?aid=frg&utm_source=google&utm_medium=product&utm_campaign=feed-details&gclid=COi8nPGF8MkCFQVbfgodL30Bww

  4. Oh, my gosh, this is so fascinating to me... in that, it never occurred to me that there are multiple generations out there now who don't know the song came first. Ha, at mid 60's, I am ancient and this is proof. I'm not sure whether to thank you or curse you!

  5. I've never seen the animated Frosty. Since I live with Scrooge, I don't expect that will change this year but now I'm wondering what Frosty is doing with that kid - I thought he just danced around and had some fun, annoying a traffic cop.

  6. Oh, of course! At first I thought maybe there was an image in the window or a "Waldo" somewhere in there. But, wow, that Poinsettia greenhouse is just like Frosty's! Merry Christmas, Loree!
