Okay not really, but isn’t that what they look like? You know, except soft and cuddly, and green. We parked in front of this garden in Berkeley, CA, or maybe it was Oakland, I started to lose track of where one stopped and the other began. The light was not doing my photo taking any favors but I still had to try. I mean just look at them…
Snakes I tell you! (AKA
Asparagus densiflorus 'Myersii')…

Sure looks like fuzzy green snakes to me! Like someone buried a Medusa feet first in the ground.
ReplyDeleteA couple of Medusas!
DeleteReally great! It's like the friendlier, shadier cousin of an octopus cactus patch!
ReplyDeleteOh that would be cool too! Although weeding would be a bitch.
DeleteHey Lady, where'd you get those snakes? Haha that is awesome. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYou are so welcome.
DeleteInteresting looking planting. I wish mine would grow that well but they die back most years.
ReplyDeleteYa, I'd love to be able to plant these too.
DeleteWhen I was in San Francisco recently I saw lots of mass plantings of Asparagus densiflorus 'meyersii', they look pretty cool, and very serpenty!
ReplyDeleteSerpent is a much better word than snake.
DeleteIt looks like Sideshow Bob's (The Simpsons) hair. I like these snakes better than the real ones!
ReplyDeleteMe too! As for Sideshow Bob I'm glad you included the Simpsons reference. I must be the only person in America who doesn't watch that show.
DeleteThat is a good plant; not weedy/invasive like the A. densiflorus 'Sprengeri', and looks fabulous with Agaves. And in that garden, too.
ReplyDeleteMmm, with agaves, I like that idea.
DeleteI don´t know why, but I've always liked the texture and form of this plant.
ReplyDeleteAnd I used to hate it! Thank goodness I finally came around.
DeleteSnakes. Why did it have to be snakes..
ReplyDeleteNot a fan?
Deletehas anyone grown this as a houseplant? if so, how much light does it need? i have never grown an A. densiflorus 'Sprengeri' because why bother with such a painfully boring, overused plant. i would grow this!
ReplyDeleteGood question! I'm imagining humility might be more of a problem than light? I've got one in a container that spends summer under the shade pavilion where it gets very little (if any) direct light, and it's happy.
DeleteLolz! Indiana Jones reference 💚
DeleteSo much better than Snakes on A Plane! Really cool.
ReplyDeleteThanks, have you seen it, the movie?
DeleteNever thought I'd be praising a garden for its snaky goodness.
ReplyDeleteThat makes two of us.
DeleteI do really like these, I too have tried one but didn't realize they aren't hardy here…too much work and not enough spikes.
ReplyDeleteI think Megan (pl partner) has luck with them outdoors some years. If I found some really cheap I might give it a try.
DeleteI like the plant but it never made me think of snakes until I saw these photos.
ReplyDeleteI didn't have that association either, until I saw this garden.
DeleteIt looks dramatic like that! Although they remind me more of sideshow bob's hair more than snakes...
ReplyDeleteYou guys too? Okay I'm the only person in the world who doesn't watch The Simpsons!
DeleteSnakes or muppet tentacles. The comments on this post are hilarious! I really needed a laugh. I haven't watched the Simpsons in years, but after reading the other comments they do bring Sideshow Bob to mind.
ReplyDeletemy gardener (the hubby!) used to constantly fight (and lose) with the weed-y sibling of this guy. maybe i can convince him to let me try this one. it's fun!
