Tillandsia xerographica...is that all there is?

After waiting months to see the blooms of my silver Tillandsia xerographica I must admit the reality is a bit of a letdown, I was hoping for bright tropical-esque blooms, but it’s not to be. After spending the summer hanging in the shade pavilion…
It was moved indoors in early October.
The blooms finally started to “open” in early November.
They are pretty, in a subtle way. But every time I look at the blooms I hear Peggy Lee singing “is that all there is

  2. Well, I . . . But I'm sure it's doing really well in school, and has a great personality, though, right?

When we bought some at the garden center where I used to work, we were told that the flowers (bracts) would be yellow. I guess that was a lie.

  4. So let's keep dancing. Let's break out the booze and have a ball.

(It really filled out, though, didn't it?)

  6. Darla, it is pretty cool (the plant)...now I've started to wonder what it will look like when I cut off the bloom stalk. Not so pretty I'm afraid.

    Mr S, exactly!

Spiky O, yes I do. Another reason why I buy for foliage not flower (usually).

Denise, I'm glad you know what I'm talking about!

Gina, my nose couldn't pick up any fragrance at all. RE: the container it was a hanging candle holder but the glass insert was broken so I got it for a song!

  7. Anticlimactic, for sure...but with a plant/hanging basket combination like that wouldn't a spectacular flower be a bit much?

  8. Still, you should be proud that you've kept it flourishing to the point of blooming. I've killed my fair share of xeros.

  9. ricki, I've never had anything against plants that are "a bit much"

JeffB, would it be cheating to admit I bought with the bloom-spike already forming?

I, too, love that hanging planter! However, I don't see the blog you referenced. Would you be willing to direct me to it or tell me what you learned. I would really like to get one. Much thanks!

  12. Xerographica can take up to 25 years to fully mature.

  13. Tillandsia xerographica like sunlight and lots of it. In its native habitat it lives in the desert. More sunlight may have given you a showier flower and stalk.
